Seddika/Seddik/Sedeka

Seddika - also spelled Seddek, Sadika, Siddika, and others, from the Arabic word for a dear or faithful friend, is an Egyptian mango cultivar that rose quickly to become one of the country's most sought-after varieties after its wide adoption around 2015. Unlike many of Egypt's celebrated palace-era mangoes, Seddika is a newcomer — traders call it a "new Egyptian kind," widely planted only from the mid-2010s, yet it won a devoted following in a remarkably short time. It is grown in the heartlands of Egyptian mango country: the fertile farms of Ismailia and the Nile Delta, and increasingly on reclaimed desert land. Today it stands alongside stalwarts like Ewais, Mesk, and Fons among the finest Egyptian mangoes.

The fruit is medium and neatly oval, weighing about 350–600 grams, with thin, smooth, easy-to-peel skin that ripens from green to a warm yellow-orange with a reddish tinge and an often blemish-free finish. Cut open, it releases a strong, sweet, aromatic fragrance like that of elite Indian mangoes. The pulp is deep orange, completely fibreless, juicy, and buttery — firm yet melt-in-the-mouth — around a pleasingly small seed, giving an excellent pulp-to-seed ratio. Its signature is the flavour: complex, spicy yet floral, and Alphonso-like, which Egyptian connoisseurs call rich, well-rounded, and unlike any other variety (a quality confirmed at Amrakunja Nursery & Farms during the 2026 season). It is very sweet, with TSS up to 24 brix. Superb fresh — in slices or straight from the fruit — it also makes a thick, fragrant juice and a fine base for smoothies and desserts, and is best enjoyed as a table variety. Like other named Egyptian cultivars, Seddika is polyembryonic.

A mid-to-late-season mango, Seddika is harvested from the first week of June in West Bengal, India, and from early July through August in Egypt. Its shelf life is very high — around 15 days post-harvest. It has earned a particular place among Egypt's export varieties: where many beloved local mangoes are too soft-skinned and short-lived to travel, Seddika pairs rich Egyptian eating quality with firmer, more resilient flesh, recording among the highest fruit firmness in comparative testing of Egyptian cultivars. That resilience, together with its clean, colourful looks, has made it an increasingly successful export across the Gulf, the wider Middle East, Europe, and beyond.

Seddika trees are vigorous with an open canopy, though their height can be controlled by regular pruning. Its firm, well-structured fruit and small seed suit both the fresh market and the practical demands of handling, packing, and transport — a genuinely Egyptian mango that also travels. Over the last two seasons (2025 and 2026), Seddika has shown itself to be a regular bearer in India, where its aroma, taste, and flavour have been exceptionally good.
